The Rajasthan High Court has directed the state government to withdraw all driving licenses issued to illiterates.

According to the judgement, an illiterate person is a menace to pedestrians as he would not be in a position to understand road signs and notices of caution and therefore the license issued should be withdrawn. The state authorities have been directed to submit a report within a period of one month.

The civil writ petition was filed in the Jaipur bench of the Rajasthan High Court by Deepak Singh who wanted a transport license issued as he had already been holding an LMV license for the past 13 years. The petition was dismissed by the court. According to the Motor vehicles Act, a minimum qualification of standard VIII is required for any transport license.
