Rumour: Suzuki to build next-gen Wagon R at Gujarat plant

Japanese carmaker Suzuki is rumoured to be planning the manufacture of the next-generation Wagon R, codenamed YCA, at its upcoming wholly-owned plant in Gujarat.

The YCA is likely to be built as a 5-seater and a 7-seater. It is expected to share many parts with other Suzuki products, which will allow the company to keep its price competitive.

In 2013, Suzuki had revealed a version of the Wagon R with seven seats. While the car was longer than the regular Wagon R, it was still less than 4 metres in length. This makes it a rival for the Datsun GO+ MPV, which is scheduled to be launched on January 15, 2015.

Suzuki is expected to start prototype production of the YCA in January 2017 and commercial production is likely to commence in the month of May.

Work on the Gujarat plant has already commenced. The facility will sell cars to Maruti Suzuki, Suzuki's Indian subsidiary, on a no-profit-no-loss basis. If the plant is ever to be merged or transferred, it will be done at book value.
