Vietnam police detain person for criticising Vinfast on social media

Officials have even seized Sonnie's electronic devices and copied the data under the Vietnamese criminal code.

According to reports, Sonnie Tran, a Vietnamese social media personality, was reportedly harassed by authorities for criticising home-grown automaker Vinfast on social media.

Until December, Tran posted alleged problems with Vinfast in Facebook's business groups. These include topics about the venture's financial integrity, Vinfast using shell companies to hide its debt, misleading sales numbers and claims that its design was outsourced to China & India rather than its publicized collaboration with Pininfarina.

As per reports, Tran is said to have been repeatedly detained by police in Ho Chi Minh City and even spent 35 hours in interrogation at a police station. He was questioned regarding his motives for criticising Vinfast, with the police even searching for evidence of a nefarious backer for his activities. Officials have even seized Sonnie's electronic devices and copied the data under the Vietnamese criminal code.

Reports also mention that in May 2021, the company is said to have had cops harass one of its customers for posting a video complaining of problems in their cars and the difficulty of getting warranty work done on it.
