Rumour: Next-gen Mahindra Thar to get new 2.0L diesel engine

According to a media report, the next generation Mahindra Thar is likely to be powered by a new 2.0-litre diesel engine which will comply with BS-VI emission norms.

At present the Thar is powered by a 2.5-litre diesel engine, which makes 104 BHP and 247 Nm of torque. The new 2.0-litre unit, which is expected replace it, is rumoured to produce around 138 BHP and more than 300 Nm of torque. Reports suggest that Mahindra might also offer a more powerful version of the Thar later in its life cycle.

The new Thar is expected to be based on the Gen3 chassis, which underpins the Scorpio and the TUV range. Spy images suggest that the vehicle is likely to be wider than the current Thar and could get a wider track and independent front suspension.

The new Thar is reportedly built to comply with upcoming safety norms and is expected to come with safety features like driver airbag, ABS and rear parking sensors.
