Rumour: Isuzu MU-X India launch by end-2016

Isuzu is reportedly planning to bring the MU-X SUV in India, which is expected to be launched by the end of this year. If the said reports are true, the MU-X will replace the MU-7 SUV currently on sale in India.

The MU-7 was launched in 2012, when the Japanese manufacturer ventured into the Indian market. Though it came with ample space on the inside, a large vehicle feel on the outside, and a 3.0-litre engine under its hood, the MU-7 wasn't really able to make a mark in the segment. This lukewarm response was mainly attributed to the MU-7's dated looks and poor levels of fit and finish. With the MU-X, Isuzu is said to have worked on these limitations, and thus hopes to get a better response from the Indian customers.

The Isuzu MU-X is built on the same platform that underpins the Chevrolet Trailblazer. It also shares various design cues with the Chevy SUV, especially the side profile. Isuzu has given it projector headlamps and LED DRLs, a muscular front bumper and a thick, double-slat chrome grille.

The interior too is similar to what is offered on the Chevrolet Trailblazer. There is a multi-function steering wheel and a modern-looking instrument cluster. Features on offer include automatic climate control, cruise control, and an 8-inch touchscreen system.

In international markets, the MU-X is powered by a 3.0-litre diesel engine that churns out 174 BHP and 380 Nm of torque. However, Isuzu might equip the Indian version with the same engine that powers the MU-7. This is also a 3.0-litre unit, but it develops slightly lower power and torque figures of 161 BHP and 360 Nm, respectively.

Once launched, the Isuzu MU-X will compete with established rivals like the Toyota Fortuner and the Ford Endeavour.
