Parking space proof to soon be necessary for buying a vehicle

The Government of India is currently working on a proposal that will make it mandatory to submit proof of parking space for registration of new vehicles. The proposal is still in its initial framing stage and no specific timeline for its implementation has been revealed. It is also not clear whether this rule will be applicable for all vehicles or only for four-wheelers.

This step is being taken as a measure to decongest city roads. The Government has noticed that all metros and even tier-I and tier-II cities are facing a shortage of parking spaces. This often results in illegally parked vehicles on public roads. An ever-increasing number of new vehicles being added to roads every year and lack of planning during real estate construction are making this problem more acute with every passing year.

The government is currently in talks with the states to decide the next step. Experts believe that in order to reduce congestion, the government also needs to work on updating the country's public transport system to motivate more people to use it.
