Hyundai unveils new Elexio electric SUV for China

The new SUV is built on the E-GMP architecture, which underpins numerous electric models from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis.

Hyundai has unveiled its new electric SUV called the Elexio. The new SUV has been developed by Beijing Hyundai, the carmaker’s joint venture with BAIC Motor, specifically for the Chinese market.

The new SUV is built on the E-GMP architecture, which underpins numerous electric models from Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis. The Elexio breaks away from the ‘Ioniq’ moniker that features on Hyundai EVs. It also sports a new design language compared to other EVs in the Hyundai portfolio. Up front, it gets slim LED headlamps with a light bar below. It gets sculpted wheel arches with body cladding. It gets flush door handles and a tapering roofline that ends in a darkened D-pillar. At the rear, the Elexio gets a full-width slim LED light bar and ‘Elexio’ lettering in bold. There are no details on the dimensions yet, but it appears to be a big SUV if the pictures are anything to go by.

While Hyundai hasn’t given details on the interiors, one can expect a new digital instrument cluster and an “intelligent interface” with no physical buttons that the carmaker has teased. The infotainment system will run on the Qualcomm SA8295 chip.

Hyundai has not revealed any powertrain details, but the battery is expected to give 700 km on a single charge in normal conditions under Chinese CTLC testing protocols. The battery will also feature rapid charging, going from 30-80% in just 27 minutes. It’s housed in a reinforced structure that meets the crash safety standards.

The market launch of the Hyundai Elexio will happen in the coming months. There is still no clarity if the SUV will be offered in other global markets at a later date.
