Canada to impose 100% tariff on Chinese EVs

Tesla is currently the only automaker to sell Chinese-built EVs in Canada.

According to reports, Canada will follow the likes of the USA and Europe and impose tariffs on electric vehicles coming from China.

As per reports, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, has stated that they will impose a massive 100% tariff on Chinese EVs. The new tariffs will come into effect from October 1st, 2024 and will apply to electric vehicles along with select hybrid passenger cars, buses, trucks and delivery vans coming from China.

The reason to impose tariffs is similar to that of both the USA and Europe, which is "to protect domestic manufacturing".

The decision to impose tariffs by Canada comes just ahead of BYD's plans to enter the market. While BYD themselves are yet to confirm its entry into Canada, reports cite regulatory filings that the move will take place soon.

Currently, Tesla is the only automaker to sell Chinese-built EVs in Canada.
