Volkswagen recalls 389 units of Polo over faulty handbrake

Earlier this week Volkswagen had issued a letter to its dealers, directing them to stop deliveries of the Polo hatchback. The company had not given any reason for this step, but it had stated that it had nothing to do with the infamous emission scandal that has hit the German carmaker recently.

Now, Volkswagen has announced that it is recalling 389 units of the Polo from a single batch of production from the month of September 2015. The company will carry out an inspection and preventive repair of the handbrake mechanism of the cars.

Volkswagen has determined that under certain conditions, the handbrake mechanism would lose effectiveness. An analysis performed by the company has shown that a batch of handbrake cable retention levers in the rear brake liner might break under certain conditions.

Volkswagen claims that it has already identified the affected cars and has notified its service network on the issue. Customers who own the identified vehicles will be contacted by the company’s dealers to bring their cars for an inspection and preventive repair. This operation will start with immediate effect. It will be carried out at the company’s workshops at no cost to the customer and will require approximately one hour.

The deliveries of the identified Polo cars in stock which had been put on hold yesterday will be resumed as and when the inspection and preventive repair of each car is completed. Volkswagen has also confirmed that deliveries for the non-impacted Polo range continue as per schedule.
