Rumour: Hyundai mulls launching Genesis sedan in India

Korean car manufacturer, Hyundai is rumoured to be considering introduction of its Genesis sedan in India.

Hyundai does not expect to sell the Genesis in high volumes. Therefore, it is likely to get the car into India through the CBU route rather than assembling it locally.

The second-generation Genesis is Hyundai's most luxurious offering and sports the size and equipment offered by cars like the Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series and Audi A6. Presently it is sold in some markets with a choice of two petrol engines - 3.8-litre V6 producing 311 bhp and 5.0-litre, V8, developing 420 bhp. Both engines come mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. While both variants come only with a rear-wheel drive configuration as standard, V6 customers can opt for or a four-wheel drive configuration.

If Hyundai does launch the Genesis in India, it will sell the 3.8-litre variant at a price of approximately Rs. 45 lakh, which is at par with some German luxury offerings. The problem for the company is that none of its premium products have made an impression on the Indian market. Beyond Rs. 20 lakh, customers tend to prefer products from established players with aspirational badges.
