Rumour: Hyundai GS compact SUV to get 1.4L diesel engine

Hyundai is gearing up to launch a compact SUV, codenamed GS, in India. The vehicle, which is billed to be Hyundai's challenger for the Renault Duster, will have 5 seats and is expected to be powered by the 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines that are found in the Verna sedan.

Hyundai is also rumoured to be developing a version of the SUV with a 1.4-litre diesel power plant. This engine is the same unit that is found in the i20 hatchback and the lower variants of the Verna.

The GS will measure 4.27 metres in length. This means it will not be eligible for the excise benefits that sub 4-metre cars can avail of. However, the smaller engine will help Hyundai in pricing it competitively as engines with a capacity of less than 1.5 litres attract lower taxes.

Like other Hyundai cars, the GS is expected to be loaded with equipment.

The GS is known as the ix25 in international markets. It is expected to be launched in India in the coming months.
