Rolls Royce "considering" luxury SUV

BMW group owned British bespoke car maker Rolls Royce is considering a luxury SUV to rival the likes of the production version of the Bentley EXP 9F and the Lamborghini Urus SUVs. Rolls Royce's latest announcement is a U-turn of sorts as the bespoke luxury car brand, in the past, has dismissed rumours about its interest in a luxury SUV. For now, Rolls Royce is evaluating whether buyers would be interested in a luxury SUV from the marque.

With a production sign off not in sight as of now, it could still be quite some time before an SUV with the Rolls Royce double R logo rolls onto the roads. Also, it remains to be seen whether Rolls Royce chooses to build a full-fledged SUV or whether the brand settles for a crossover as has been the case with Bentley and Lamborghini. The coming months are likely to throw more light upon Rolls Royce's luxury SUV plans.

Meanwhile, the demand for luxury SUVs is rising in markets such as China and the United States, a prime reason behind luxury brands such as Jaguar, Bentley and Lamborghini coming up with SUVs and Crossovers. Most of these SUVs are likely to be sold in India as well, whose roads favour cars with higher ground clearance. The luxury SUVs built by Lamborghini, Bentley and Jaguar are also likely to sell well in other developing markets around the world, whose road conditions are similar to those in India.

With Rolls Royce selling cars from all three of its model lines -  Phantom, Ghost and Wraith - in India, expect the car maker to launch the SUV here if and when it decides to jump on to the luxury SUV bandwagon. The luxury car maker is bullish about the Indian car market and has been steadily increasing its presence in the country by adding dealerships. Rolls Royce is also contemplating an "India Edition" Roller next year.
