Next generation Porsche 911 could get a plug-in hybrid

The Porsche 911 continues to be one of the most iconic sports-cars in the world. Through its 50 year+ history, the 911 has been modified for multiple competitions by private teams and Porsche themselves. The 911 has also been developed as an electric vehicle (eRUF Model A), and the next generation 911 may feature a plug-in hybrid.

In a conversation with Autocar, Porsche CEO Matthias Muller said the German car maker could consider offering a hybrid with the next generation 911. The 911 is set to get a facelift later this year, but that model will not get the addition of a hybrid motor. With the 918 Spyder, Porsche has already put a strong foot forward in the hybrid supercar race. A new flat-four engine is being developed for the Boxter and Cayman & Muller said Porsche could work on an electric hybrid set up for those models as well. The introduction of these hybrids depends on the development and production schedules for individual models according to Muller.

The 911 hybrid may still be a project under consideration, but with emission norms getting increasingly stringent, electric motors may soon prove to be the only way to marry performance with efficiency.
