Moderator Vid6639 tries out the new Mahindra Thar Roxx

The Roxx is really good, but not without the typical Mahindra quirks. But yes, it's very well sorted and huge leap up from the 3-door Thar.

Here are my observations.

What impressed me:

  • The Roxx is really good, but not without the typical Mahindra quirks. But yes, it's very well sorted and huge leap up from the 3-door Thar.
  • Also better than the XUV700 in a few areas. One XUV700 owner came to see and drive it. He was saying its better riding than the XUV700 and has a bigger sunroof, better brakes and auto dimming IRVM. The XUV700 is a monocoque and has fantastic dynamics. But on a bad unpaved section of road, the ROXX simply glides over the surface vs the XUV. This is where the difference lies in ladder frame vs monocoque, the ability to take on bad roads. But the suspension tuning has to be spot on which is what they have achieved with the ROXX.
  • There's a lot less wrong to tell. The Jimny and 3-door Thar feel crude compared to this.
  • After the Roxx, I got back into the Jimny and was wondering why the car isn't turning and if power steering stopped working.
  • You can chuck the Roxx around like an i10 because of the super light steering and suspension.
  • The 5-door Thar is like how the 2nd-gen Thar felt vs the 1st-gen one in terms of improvement. It's a huge step up.
  • The Fortuner feels unrefined vs the Roxx diesel. It's not just engine, but the dynamics and NVH as well.

Usual Mahindra quirks:

  • The auto-hold implementation is bad just like in the XUV700. They don't have a smooth operation like the European cars. This is where you pay a premium for European engineering.
  • The engine is super refined, but a super annoying thrumming rattle, like some loose chain, is heard on medium throttle.
  • Brakes are over-servoed and crazy strong. Even vs my BMW, I took time to get used to them. The problem is that they are sharp but not linear - too much On/Off in calibration, at least in city traffic.
  • Steering is lighter than a Hyundai, I didn't like that too much. It probably weighs up at highway speeds, but in the city, it is extreme light. You feel like driving a toy car vs a full-size SUV.
  • I was wearing leather shoes and while lifting off the brake pedal, the encircled part kept hitting the dashboard plastic. Just a minor ergonomic quirk.

And now looking at my Jimny that Jaggu drove. The Jimny looks tiny compared to the Thar.
