Mercedes S 350d with new BS-VI engine unveiled

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its first BS-VI compliant vehicle in India. The Mercedes S 350d is the first in line to receive the new BS-VI compliant diesel engine. The car was recently unveiled in the presence of Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Minster of Road Transport and Highways and the Director of ARAI, Mrs. Rashmi Urdhwareshe.

The BS-VI version of the S 350d is powered by a new 6-cylinder diesel engine. It uses engine and exhaust treatment technologies like Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) and Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR).

Mercedes-Benz claims that the output of the engine has increased but fuel consumption has gone down by 6%. This was achieved thanks to the stepped-bowl combustion process, CAMTRONIC variable valve-lift control and 2-stage turbocharging. The engine block is built using aluminium while the pistons are made out of steel. Additionally, the cylinder walls are coated with an improved NANOSLIDE coating.

As per ARAI's report, nitrous oxide emissions from the new engine are down by 68% while particulate matter has reduced by 82%, compared to the BS-IV. ARAI has also put the engine through an on-board diagnostics test and engine power test in addition to a real world emission performance test.

Mercedes-Benz hasn't announced the launch date for the new S 350d BS-VI however it likely to be launched in the weeks following the 2018 Auto Expo.
