Lockout at Toyota's Bidadi plants

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has declared lockouts at its two manufacturing units located at Bidadi, near Bangalore, Karnataka.

The lockout comes as a result of failure of talks between the management and labour union over wage negotiations. The management and labour have been discussing a charter of demands for FY 2014 for the past 10 months.

Toyota claims that a section of workers, instigated by the union had deliberately stopped the production line and threatened supervisors, which has resulted in disruption of the manufacturing process over the past 25 days. This has resulted in the company declaring a lockout to ensure the safety of its employees.

Toyota Kirloskar Motor has two plants in Bidadi. The first plant, which rolled out its first car in 1999, has an installed capacity of 1,00,000 units per annum, while the second plant has an installed capacity of 2,10,000 units per annum. The plants are spread over 432 acres and employ more than 6,400 in total.
