Honda imports Brio-based SUV for testing; codeamed 2SJ

Last year, we had reported that Honda was working on a new compact SUV based on the Brio hatchback. Now the company has imported three units of a Brio-based SUV into India from Thailand. This car has been codenamed 2SJ.

The compact SUV is a rapidly growing segment in India. At present, it consists of the Ford EcoSport, Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano. Other major players such as Maruti, Mahindra and Hyundai are also gearing up to introduce new offerings in this segment.

According to media reports, the 2SJ is likely to come with seven seats and is not expected be less than 4 metres in length, which means it will not be eligible for excise duty benefits. The SUV is expected to be powered by 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines.

Compare to the current crop of Brio-based cars, the 2SJ is likely to look radically different. However, the car is likely to share many parts with its siblings, which will help the company keep costs down.

The 2SJ is likely to go on sale in 2017.
