Govt. wants to cancel registrations of vehicles beyond repair

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is planning to bring in a policy under which, it will be able to determine whether a vehicle has reached the end of its life or not, irrespective of its age.

The "sunset policy", as it will be known, will enable the government to decide when a vehicle is beyond repair and unfit to ply on the roads. These vehicles will have their registrations cancelled and sent to the scrapyard. At present, the government is looking for scrapyards to send the deregistered cars to. It is likely that these scrapyards will come up on the outskirts of Chennai (in Tamil Nadu) and Kandla (in Gujarat).

In order to check the rising levels of pollution, the government is also shortening the timelines for implementing BS V and BS VI emission norms. While the former will be implemented in 2019, the latter will be brought about in 2023.
