Govt. approves Rs. 7 lakh crore highway development plan

The cabinet has given their nod to a Rs. 7 lakh crore national highways development plan. It the biggest road development plan ever approved by the government under which around 83,000 km of road infrastructure will be further developed.

It includes the 28,400 km Bharatmala highway program which will connect border areas with the rest of the country and reduce travel time between certain destinations.

The project also aims to improve the traffic flow on key corridors by building access-controlled 4-lane roads that should benefit the movement of trucks and other cargo vehicles. Smart tag-based toll collection systems will also be installed to reduce the time spent at toll booths.

The government aims to complete the project by 2022.
