Fourth-gen BMW X3 globally unveiled

The X3 follows BMW's new nomenclature by getting rid of the "i" prefix.

BMW has taken the wraps off the fourth-generation X3 SUV. The new BMW X3 gets a major design overhaul, both inside and out, while also being based on a new platform.

Some of the updates include a new-format kidney grille - illuminated on the top-spec M50 trim, L-shaped DRLs with newly-designed LED headlamps, and 19-inch alloy wheels, which are offered as standard with 20 or 21-inch wheels offered as an option. The rear also comes with a new set of LED tail lights.

The updates continue on the inside as well, with a new curved display featuring BMW's latest iDrive9 infotainment. The SUV also comes with flat-bottom steering, heated sports seats, and plenty of connected tech and comfort features all around the cabin.

The new-gen BMW X3 comes with a choice of petrol, petrol-hybrid, and diesel engine options. The X3 also follows BMW's new nomenclature by getting rid of the "i" prefix. It gets 3 petrol and 1 diesel variant, which include the X3 20 xDrive, X3 30e xDrive, and X3 M50 xDrive. The lone diesel option is the X3 20d xDrive trim.

The X3 20 xDrive gets a 208 BHP 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, while the 20d xDrive comes with a 197 BHP 2.0-litre diesel with a mild-hybrid system. The X3 30e xDrive also uses the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol but is paired with a plug-in hybrid unit offering a max power output of 300 BHP and 450 Nm. The X3 30e can also be driven in EV-only mode for about 90 km, thanks to its 19.7 kWh battery pack.

Finally, the top-spec X3 M50 xDrive gets a 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It produces 398 BHP and 580 Nm, allowing for a 4.6 second, 0 - 100 km/h sprint time. The M50 xDrive has an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h with optional performance tyres. On the standard wheels, the top speed is restricted to 210 km/h. All powertrain options on the new BMW X3 are paired with an 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard.
