Cars to come fitted with number plates from the factory

Mr. Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways has told the media that vehicles will soon come fitted with number plates from the factory. Further, there will be no difference across the segments like hatchback, SUV or sedans - all these will get number plates of the same security level.

As per the new system, vehicle manufacturers will fit the plates while embossing will be done later. The price of the plates will be included in the cost of the vehicle.

As of now, number plates are procured by states separately from designated agencies and numbers are issued by district-level Regional Transport Offices (RTO). The plates cost in the range of Rs. 800-40,000. The minister said that the intention behind the introduction of high security number plates was to bring uniformity across states by standardising the design.
