BMW 3 and 5 Series now available with space-saver spare tyre

Thanks to BHPian M00M for bringing this to our notice.

BMW's customers have been demanding the inclusion of a spare tyre in the list of standard equipment offered for a while now and finally the company has taken notice. The German luxury carmaker is now offering the 3 Series and 5 Series models with a spare tyre, albeit a space-saver. The cost of the spare tyre is included in the cost of the car.

BMW cars are sold with run-flat tyres as a part of standard equipment. In the event of a puncture, these tyres resist the effects of deflation and allow the car to be driven at reduced speeds for a certain distance. Also, unlike a tube-type or tubeless tyre, run-flats will allow the driver to control the vehicle better in the case of a blow-out.

However, they do have their disadvantages. Click here to read about them.

Having a spare tyre in a car is extremely important in a country like India. The poor quality of the roads in the country subjects tyres to much higher wear and tear compared to the roads in developed countries like Germany. In the event of a puncture, help might be available if one is in big cities like Mumbai and Delhi. However, outside big cities where repair outlets are not easily found, the lack of a spare tyre can cripple the car and sometimes leave the driver stranded.

BMW's move to provide the spare tyre comes as a welcome development. Customers will now feel much more stress-free while undertaking long journeys.
