2021 Mercedes S-Class gets frontal impact rear-seat airbags

According to Mercedes-Benz, the next generation S-Class will be equipped with airbags for rear-seat passengers to protect them in the event of a frontal impact.

The company claims that the rear seat airbags in the new S-Class will be the first of their kind. They are said to be a completely different concept to that of front airbags. The airbags have to adapt to child seats in addition to the inflatable seat belt that is already offered in the S-Class.

The car will come with PRE-SAFE Impulse Side feature which uses radar sensors to identify an imminent side impact. It is claimed to protect occupants by using air cushions in the seats to move the driver or front-seat passenger towards the centre of the vehicle. The system also raises the entire vehicle using its E-Active Body Control suspension.

The next generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class will debut on September 2, 2020.
