200 km road trip in my Tata Punch EV: Amazed by its performance & range

The way we drive and the way the vehicle performs has a lot of impact on the range. Maintaining a constant speed is more important than using higher regen modes.

BHPian Karansingh recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

200+ KM trip (Mumbai - Aamby Valley - Mumbai)

Crux:

  • Overall AEC - 118 wh/km
  • Amby Valley to Mumbai AEC - 77 wh/km
  • AC was on full time at 23.5 deg C.
  • Power mode: ECO
  • Regen Level: Mixed

Recently I made a trip to a place called Nostravila in Lonavala. Took quite a few stops since I was travelling with my soon-to-be better half. Chose a Monday and Tuesday (15th -16th July) as I prefer less crowd and peace over traffic snarls and chaos.

I started the journey at 7.30 am as I wanted to beat the office-going vehicles.

Took 1st stop at Kalamboli McDonalds for a coffee. This outlet is around 32 kilometers from my place and the battery charge was around 90% (from 100%)

Took 2nd stop at the Food Mall after Khopoli to get some snacks. Battery was at 78%.  (Had to stop before Lonavala to get some fruits and hence it shows in the Excel snip)

Took 3rd stop at Mapro Garden where there was a ChargeZone fast charger available. This was my first time using a fast-charger, so I decided to charge 10 units which cost me Rs 247.

Charged the vehicle from 64% to 93%

Took another stop at Smokin Joes right at the entrance of Lonavala city. The battery was at 92%

Continued to Nostravila after this stop, which is a decent hill climb. Was amazed by the performance of the car even in ECO mode with Regen at level 3.

I have to say that the suspension of the car and the power that it delivers are mated really well. I am keen on taking McQueen on longer trips.

Next day

We started from Nostravila and drove nonstop to home. The battery was at 81% and it was 58% when I parked the car.

I spotted Safari EV being tested on the way back, which made me want to take a closer look at it. Had to break the speed limit and use the sport mode to get closer to the Safari. Max Speed I did was 136 kmph.

Even after mildly spirited driving, I was amazed to see the range on the screen, it was increasing!

As usual, just before my home, there was a lot of traffic which ate up around 40-45 mins in the return leg.

Upon reaching home I quickly checked the AEC of both the days and the data from the return journey shocked me. AEC was at 77wh/km where we covered around 95 kms (of which 60 kms was the Mum-Pune Expressway)

Conclusion

The way we drive and the way the vehicle performs has a lot of impact on the range. Maintaining a constant speed is more important than using higher regen modes. On highways I chose level 2 and within the city level 3. On hills, during climbing, I kept it at 1 and while descending I kept it at 3.

The Punch.EV may be an expensive prospect for many, however it is a very economical car if used in the city and for short trips.
