AX5L Petrol AT TGDI 1000km+ Ownership Review

Recently, I completed ~1200km on my two week old car, so I thought that now is a good time to note down my experience and share with others who are in their buying journey.

I will break down into 3 buckets:

  1. Driving Comfort
  2. Performance & Fuel Efficiency
  3. Issues

Driving Comfort:

Well to start, this car’s suspension is spot on, and this easily eats away all of Mumbai’s potholes. It’s nice and soft in city and on high speeds feels nice and planted. On the Mumbai Pune Expressway I briefly drove this car at 140kmph and honestly the car was glued to the road. This particular variant also comes with 3 drive modes, and surpsingly, I’ve found myself using the ZIP mode the most as my driving is mostly in city and in this mode the car is an absolute joy to manoeuvre around. The AC too is quite powerful, but honestly I’ve rarely used the dual zone feature. Lastly, the NVH levels are quite controlled and on good Tarmac the car drives like an EV!

Performance & FE

By now everyone knows that this car is indeed a BEAST; its power is really nicely mated to the TC transmission that feels very smooth. Performance in all modes is quite powerful and undoubtedly driving it in Zoom mode will make you grin ear to ear. The only time I did feel the car is slightly struggling is when I was driving it with full load on a slightly uphill road. In that circumstance fhe car frequently downshifted and I could feel the shifts happening. Though, those shifts were still smooth and the performance was still better than the 3xo’s rivals.

My fuel efficiency though hasn’t been that great. Despite driving on highways for 300-400km my fuel efficiency is only 10kmpl. I think this will chance after first service. I’m using unleaded fuel only.

Issues:

The car isn’t flawless. Most irritatingly, the infotainment system hangs 2/10 times. I’ve noticed this always happens when just starting the car and I find dreadfully that the screen is blank. It does come on automatically after 50 seconds or after restarting the car.

The mileage also can be an issue to some. If your running is high you can take diesel. However, the TGDI is MOST fun to drive imo.

ADAS

I’ve used the Adaptive Cruise Control quite heavily and I think I can say confidently that this feature works beautifully above 80kmph and is best enjoyed on National Highways. I’ve tried using ACC at 40kmph on Mumbai roads and at times the car has braked erratically to risk a rear end collision. On the other hand, on roads like the Atal Setu, Mumbai, the car is capable to fully drive on its own on the entire stretch.

The high beam assist is a useless feature imo for India driving habits. The lane keep assist works well 8/10 times and I haven’t had any issues with it.
