Yamaha launches "Precious Edition" of the Ray scooter

Yamaha Motor India has launched the Ray "Precious" Edition in India. The "Precious Edition" of the automatic scooter is a dressed up model that aims to get more eyeballs, and in the process more sales during the Indian festive season. Apart from cosmetic embellishments, the Yamaha Ray remains unchanged mechanically.

Considering the fact that scooter is just a year old in the Indian market, the lack of serious upgrades don't seem very surprising. The Ray Precious Edition has been priced at 48,605 rupees, ex-showroom Delhi. At this price, the limited edition scooter model is positioned between the regular Ray (47,105 rupees) and the Ray-Z (49,105 rupees) models. 

The following are the visual changes that the Yamaha Ray "Precious Edition" features, 

  • Black paint job with pink decals
  • Precious Edition badging on the headlamp fairing
  • Ray Cygnus branding at the rear

Apart from these changes, the Ray Precious Edition has little to show for in order to command the 1,500 rupee price increase over the regular Ray. In that light, one would be paying the additional sum for the new paint job and graphics. The Ray Precious Edition will have a limited production run. The Precious Edition of the Ray has been built by Yamaha to commemorate the brand's association with the Ponds Femina Miss India Beauty Contest. 

The scooter is powered by a 113 cc four stroke engine that outputs 7.1 PS of peak power and 8.1 Nm of peak torque. As with the case of most automatic scooters in India, the gearbox is an automatic CVT unit. The Ray comes with a claimed mileage figure of 53 Kmpl. Yamaha also sells a male-centric version of the Ray, dubbed the Ray-Z. The Ray-Z comes with slightly different styling. 

Yamaha Motor India, the Indian subsidiary of Japanese two wheeler giant Yamaha, has plans of launching more automatic scooters in India, considering the good growth that this segment has been experiencing for over a decade now. The two wheeler maker also plans to concentrate on the commuter motorcycle segment while also looking at making India a global hub for commuter bike exports.
