Volkswagen Polo GTI spotted testing in India

Earlier this year, we had reported that Volkswagen was considering the introduction of sportier models of the Polo hatchback in the country. Among the models under consideration were the new Polo GT and the GTI. Now, a Polo GTI has been spotted testing on our roads. Records indicate that Volkswagen has indeed imported on unit of the car for testing purposes.

The Polo GTI gets redesigned headlights with daytime running lights, redesigned bumpers, side skirts, double barrel exhaust and different alloy wheels compared to the regular Polo. Changes to the interior include aluminium pedals, GTI steering wheel and sports seats.

In international markets, the GT is powered by a 1.4-litre, TSI petrol engine that puts out 148 BHP, while the GTI gets a 1.8-litre 189 bhp TSI petrol power plant and a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DSG gearbox. The Polo GTI can reach 100 kph from a standstill in under 7 seconds.

If Volkswagen does go on to launch the GT or GTI in India, it is expected to price them over Rs. 17 lakh, even if they are locally assembled. At that price, they are likely to be considered only by a handful of buyers.
