Uber cab services banned in Delhi; company blacklisted too

The transport department has banned all activities by Uber cabs in Delhi with immediate effect. Going a step ahead, the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, has also blacklisted the cab service provider from providing any transport service in the national capital in the future.

These harsh steps are the consequences of the unfortunate rape incident of a 27-year old woman in New Delhi allegedly by an Uber cab driver on 05/12/2014. The driver has been arrested and is in police custody. Where the US radio cab service provider went wrong was that they hired this driver without a proper background check and mandatory police verification. The driver, identified as Shiv Kumar Yadav was accused in a sexual assault case back in 2011 too; hence turned out to be a possible repeat offender.

This incident raised questions over the safety and security of passengers who hire Uber cabs. In response, Uber CEO, Travis Kalanick said that the company will work with the government to establish clear background checks in their commercial transport licensing programs and will also partner with groups to promote and develop technologies for safety of women in New Delhi.
