Tiger 800 owner test rides BMW R 1300 GS; Observations & pics

Choose between the strong build of Indian & western cars or the reliability of far Eastern cars.

BHPian //M recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I test rode the R1300GS from Lutyens Motorrad in Naraina, Delhi, recently. The showroom had a R1300GS Trophy variant and a R1300GS Triple Black 1 variant on display. The test ride motorcycle was also a R1300GS Trophy variant. My first impressions of the motorcycle -

  • Coming from a Tiger 800, which is a little top heavy, it is always a pleasure to ride the boxer twins as they feel much lighter to manoeuvre. The R1300GS is no exception, it is an extremely easy motorcycle to ride and the weight factor is hardly felt due to the lower centre of gravity.
  • There is a noticeable buzz from the twin while on the move, to the extent that it was a little irritating for the rider. This might have been a test ride motorcycle specific issue, and probably a test ride on another motorcycle might provide more clarity on this.
  • The R1300GS is deceptively quick. I rode it in “Road” mode as well as in “Dynamic” mode. The motorcycle feels extremely eager to cover the distance specially in the “Dynamic” mode.
  • The test ride motorcycle was a Trophy variant which comes with a standard comfort seat, which translates to a 870 mm ride height. For my 6’2” frame, I could tip-toe both my legs comfortably but this might be an issue for most riders. However, the Triple Black 1 variant comes with a different seat which translates to a comparatively lower ride height of 850 mm.
  • The R1300GS handles really well for a motorcycle that has massive dimensions and weighs over 200 kgs. The boxer twin plays a major factor here.
  • Coming to the looks, I am a sucker for the asymmetrical and industrial design of the previous gen R1200/R1250 GS. The 1300GS looks much sleeker and a little tame in comparison.
  • The 1300 feels compact, but it is no way a small motorcycle. The upcoming 1300GSA must be significantly wider as well.
  • OTR Delhi for the R1300GS is approximately 25 L for the Triple Black 1 variant, 25.25 L for the Trophy variant and 25.50 L for the Triple Black 2 variant. The Option 719 variant retails for roughly 27.5 L OTR Delhi. The pricing of the R1250 GSA Trophy variant is also in the same vicinity, approximately 26.5 L OTR Delhi.
