Tata Tiago - 1 lakh bookings up; 65,000 units sold

Tata Motors has announced that the Tiago hatchback has received 1 lakh bookings since its launch. Launched in April 2016, it was the first car to adorn the company's IMPACT design philosophy. Tata has till now sold over 65,000 units of the Tiago in India. The company claims that its plant in Sanand, Gujarat is running at full capacity to meet the demand. The hatchback is currently the best-selling car from the Indian automaker.

The Tiago was launched with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol and a 1.05-litre, three-cylinder diesel engine, both of which were mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. An AMT (automated manual transmission) unit was offered with the petrol engine earlier this year. The company is also said to be working on a performance-oriented version of the Tiago, though it is yet to be seen whether the same is put into production anytime soon.

The Tiago's success comes at a time when Tata Motors is trying to revamp its product portfolio to boost its market share in the country. After the Tiago's launch last year, the company has introduced two new products in the Indian passenger vehicle market in 2017 - the Hexa and the Tigor. It is also scheduled to launch the Nexon compact SUV later this year. With these new products, Tata is aiming to become the third largest carmaker in India by the year 2020.
