Rumour: Toyota will not launch next-gen Fortuner in 2016

Earlier this year, Toyota launched the new Fortuner in Thailand (click here to read report). The company was expected to launch the car in India in 2016. However, media reports suggest that the SUV may not come to our shores before 2017.

The Fortuner competes with the Ford Endeavour and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport in India. With Ford expected to launch the new Endeavour in the coming months, it was expected that Toyota would introduce the new Fortuner soon after. However, Toyota claims that it takes between 24 and 30 months for localisation and vendor development in a different country after a global unveiling. This means that the new Fortuner is not likely to come to India before 2017.

The current Fortuner has been leading its segment by a large margin for many years and it appears that the old car could hold off the challenge posed by the new Endeavour.

The next-generation Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, which was also unveiled earlier this year, is not likely to come to India before 2017 either.
