Rumour: Maruti Omni to be discontinued by October 2020

According to a media report, the Maruti Omni is likely to be discontinued once new safety regulations come into force. It is said that the Omni is among the models that cannot be updated to comply with the Bharat New Vehicle Safety Assessment Program (BNVSAP). The model could be pulled off the shelves by October 2020.

The Maruti Omni was launched in 1985. While it received two updates over its lifetime, its design does not allow crumple zones to be integrated into the bodywork. It is powered by a 796cc, 3-cylinder petrol engine that produces 35 BHP and 59 Nm of torque and is mated to a 4-speed manual transmission.

Maruti is also working on updating the Eeco and Alto 800 to meet the new safety norms. The company has said that both models will require extensive development to comply with the stricter crash safety regulations.
