Rivian patents spare wheel containers for its R1S SUV

Rivian could also connect the spare wheel container to the vehicle's infotainment system.

Rivian has filed a new patent application titled "Spare Wheel Containers for a Vehicle", indicating that it could soon offer its electric SUV, the R1S with an external spare wheel with a storage space in between.

As per the patent, mounting the outside surface of the wheel facing inward leaves a bit of space. Rivian proposes to fill this space with a container that could serve as a storage for either toolboxes or first aid kits. The storage space could also be equipped with USB ports for charging devices, heating and cooling. It could also get RFID tags.

The space between the spare wheel's rims could also become a portable water storage area or even hold an air compressor. If so, Rivian could also connect the spare wheel container to the vehicle's infotainment system, allowing owners to monitor water levels or air pressure from the central screen inside.

The new container though is currently in its patent stage. However, if ever brought into production, it could be offered as an accessory.
