Has the Mahindra Thar base 'AX' variant been relaunched?

If it were to be relaunched, the Thar would lose its 4-star rating as Global NCAP tests the base variant of a vehicle.

UPDATE: In communication with Autocar India Mahindra has clarified that the 6-seater variant prices were updated simply as a matter of standard operating procedure. The base 'AX' variant of the Thar has not been relaunched in the Indian market.

Mahindra is said to have re-introduced the base 'AX' variant of the Thar after it was discontinued in October last year. The variant has been listed in the dealer price list, which suggests that dealerships may have started accepting bookings for the same.

As per the updated price list, the AX Petrol MT 6-seater Soft Top variant is priced at Rs. 10.68 lakh, while the diesel version costs Rs. 11.53 lakh (ex-showroom).

The base variant of the Thar came with 6-seats featuring a bench seat at the rear, unlike other variants that offered only 4-seats. It was taken off the shelves before the model received its Global NCAP safety rating.

As you might recall, the Thar received a 4-star safety rating from Global NCAP. However, the rating was awarded based on crash tests conducted on the 'LX' variant. If the AX variant is relaunched, the Thar might lose its 4-star rating as Global NCAP tests the base variant of a vehicle.
