Kolkata plans shift to electric public transport from 2030

According to a media report, the transport department of Kolkata plans to switch to electric vehicles for public transport in the city by 2030.

Last week, Kolkata was awarded the C40 award for "green mobility - low carbon commute transition" in Copenhagen. According to the mayor of the city, the West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) has a fleet of electric buses that connect the city with the suburbs. It plans to have a fleet of 5,000 electric buses by 2030. WBTC is said to have ordered 300 more e-buses under the government's FAME-II scheme.

The West Bengal government reportedly plans to set up 241 charging stations in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area.

The report states that the transport department is also planning to start battery-run ferry services along the Hooghly river.
