India plans to label tyres by rolling resistance & wet grip

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) and automobile testing agencies are planning to introduce ratings for tyres based on their rolling resistance and wet grip.

The rolling resistance rating of the tyre will indicate fuel consumption, while wet grip rating will indicate the tyre's braking ability on a wet road. The labeling would enable buyers to take an informed decision while selecting a tyre.

However, implementing the proposed rating system could face a few challenges, as India does not have enough testing facilities. At present, testing wet grip of a tyre is only possible at ICAT Manesar, while the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) is still in the process of installing a test facility. Besides, we still don't have testing facilities for rolling resistance.

Similar tyre rating systems are currently used in the European Union, Japan and South Korea.
