Hyundai confirms plans for an MPV

India's second largest car maker Hyundai has been working towards the expansion of its product portfolio. After launching the Creta compact SUV, Hyundai has confirmed its plans for a small MPV. According to Autocar India, the MPV has been internally codenamed the "IP" and will use a lot of components from the Creta parts bin.

Engine options could include the 1.4L petrol and diesel engines from the Verna with the 1.6L equivalents most likely making their way into the MPV at a later stage. The report also states that Hyundai wants to offer an automatic transmission early on to get a head start over the competition. The vehicle snapped in the images does resemble the IX20 hatchback in terms of styling and like the Hexa Space concept, will draw design characteristics from Hyundai's Fluidic Sculpture design language.

Currently, the main contenders that the Hyundai MPV will rival include the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and Honda Mobilio. While the Mobilio is the more recent entrant in the segment, it hasn't managed to have a strong enough impact on the Ertiga's sales. Given Hyundai's current game-plan, the new model is likely to come equipped with a host of features to add to its appeal.
