How the BYD Seal managed to blow me away as a turbo petrol owner

If I were largely doing intra city or inter city trips on smooth roads and highways, I would buy this car in a heart beat.

BHPian FAIAAA recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

Test drove the BYD Seal today at PPS BYD in Bangalore and to sum up my experience in two words - "blown away"!

First the positives:

  1. Explosive performance, was doing silly speeds in a matter of seconds. Found the throttle response to be great in all modes
  2. Great steering feedback.
  3. Soft suspension (also a con) and good low speed ride quality
  4. Sports coupe exterior design and interior feel
  5. High quality interiors and comprehensive feature set
  6. Ergonomics were spot on ( I am nearly 5'11") and I was comfortable in 30 seconds.

Now the negatives:

  1. Low GC, the soft suspension caves further on full load resulting in frequent scrapes on speed breakers. You need to go very slow and diagonally on speed breakers, over potholes etc.
  2. Soft suspension also means a lot of pitching and body roll. With that brute performance, it was a roller coaster side for the rear passengers who gave it a thumbs down.
  3. The panoramic roof causes glass house effect and hence AC performance was blunted. The cabin was not cooled well enough and rear passengers were unhappy. The SA did mention they provide a hard cover to be placed below the glass roof.
  4. Everything is on the touchscreen including AC vents - I really missed physical buttons.

In summary, this is a fantastic proposition. Range on the mid and top trim is impressive.

If I were largely doing intra city or inter city trips on smooth roads and highways, I would buy this car in a heart beat.

However, bulk of my 15k kms/ year / car is cross country touring and hence will look at something else.
