Google reveals the "first real build" of the self-driven car

Google has taken the wraps off what they call the "first real build" of their self-driven car prototype. The initial prototype was unveiled in May 2014, but lacked features such as a steering wheel, brakes or even headlights. Google says they have added these systems to their "first complete prototype for fully autonomous driving".

On the outside, the car doesn't look too different from the model introduced earlier. However, it now gets proper headlights, a redesigned front bumper with reflector dots, larger side view mirrors and new wheels. The roof mounted LIDAR system has also been integrated better and looks like a police beacon.

Google will continue to test the car over the next few weeks. Safety drivers will continue to oversee the vehicle for a while, while testing the temporary manual controls as well.
