CATL developing electric plane with up to 3000 km range

The EV battery maker set up its aviation division last year to develop civil aircraft and components.

According to media reports, CATL, one of the world's largest EV battery makers, has successfully tested a 4-tonne electric plane powered by high-density batteries. The company is now working towards a larger 8-tonne civil electric aircraft, which is expected to be revealed in 2028.

The new 8-tonne electric aircraft is said to offer between 1,200 - 1,800 miles (2,000 to 3,000 km) of range. It will use the brand's new Condensed Battery with up to 500 Wh/kg energy density in a single cell. CATL stated it is "opening up a brand-new electrification scenario of passenger aircraft."

CATL has partnered with the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC) to develop the aeroplane. The EV battery maker set up its aviation division last year to develop civil aircraft and components. Robert (Zeng) Yuqin, Chairman of CATL, stated that the new high-density battery will be powerful enough to make them feasible for private and business jets.

CATL currently dominates the EV battery market, accounting for 37% in the first four months of 2024. BYD was second with a market share of 15.4%.
