Fourth-gen Honda City crosses 2.5 lakh unit sales milestone

Honda has sold over 2.5 lakh units of the fourth-generation City in India. The car was launched in the country in January 2014. Having achieved this sales milestone, the current-gen has become the best-selling generation of the City sedan. Cumulatively, Honda has sold over 1 million (10 lakh) units of the City across the globe, which means that the Indian market accounts for 25% of the City's global sales.

The biggest reason behind the fourth-gen City's popularity in India is the fact that it was the first-ever model under the City name plate to be introduced with a diesel engine. The new 1.5-litre, four-cylinder i-DTEC engine helped Honda in broadening the sedan's target audience and thus bring in more sales.

Honda also claims that the CVT gearbox received good response from Indian customers as 30% of the sales of the petrol version of the car come for the automatic variants. The petrol-diesel split in sales of the current-gen City is 61% : 39%.

The City is currently available with 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines, with the former mated with either a 5-speed manual or a CVT gearbox and the latter getting a 6-speed manual transmission as the only option.
