Continental develops brake caliper that reduces brake dust

Continental could integrate the new calipers on vehicles in the next 2 - 3 years.

The Euro 7 emission regulations are scheduled to come into effect from July 2025. The new regulations are said to be one of the toughest, going beyond just tailpipe emissions and also including EVs. According to reports, the upcoming norms, for the first time, will also regulate the amount of brake dust generated and also the production of microplastics from the tyres as they wear out.

Ahead of its implementation though, Continental has come out with a new Green Caliper, which is said to help vehicles meet the brake dust regulations. Reports state that the new Green Caliper from the company offers two advantages: reduces brake dust & increases range by reducing energy consumption.

The new caliper is also designed to work on EVs as well. Electric vehicles use two types of braking: Regenerative & Conventional. According to Continental, conventional braking on EVs isn't required for 80% of the deceleration, although it is capable of bringing the EV to stop during an emergency.

The reduced wear rate on the new Green Caliper allows Continental to make the setup more compact & use smaller & thinner pads. Also, the brake is 5 kg lighter on each corner, improving range while also helping with better handling due to the lowered unsprung weight.

Reports suggest that Continental could integrate the new calipers on vehicles in the next 2 - 3 years.
