BMW unveils new Concept Skytop with Targa-like cockpit

The show car also features a pure combustion powertrain, in the form of a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8.

BMW recently unveiled 'Concept Skytop' at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este near Lake Como, Italy. The new BMW Concept Skytop is a new one-off show car, which reminds us of the more sophisticated design era of the brand. Reports suggest that it also showcases what BMW's future range of stylish road-going cars could look like.

The Concept Skytop is said to be based on BMW's existing 8 Series. However, it gets bespoke body panels and a targa-like open cockpit. In addition, the Concept Skytop also has a few throwbacks to older BMW models, such as the use of a joystick gear lever instead of the toggle switches used on the current models.

The show car also features a pure combustion powertrain, in the form of a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8. While BMW hasn't unveiled the official power figures on the Concept Skytop, reports do suggest it to be around 520 BHP. The engine is further paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, sending power to all four wheels.

However, aesthetics is where the Concept Skytop shines. The car features a relatively small illuminated kidney grille at the front, mimicking the iconic shark nose of the original CS Coupe. This is flanked on either side by sleek headlights with clean interiors. The sides and rear carry forward the minimalistic design with minimal creases and a sleek pair of tail lights.

Inside, the Concept Skytop reveals the 8 Series origins. It comes with a basic dashboard layout with plenty of tech.
