Hyundai patents steering wheel mounted shift lights

The shift lights could debut on Genesis' performance sub-brand.

According to media reports, Hyundai has filed a patent outlaying the assembly of steering wheel-mounted shift lights.

While shift lights themselves aren't a new idea, they are restricted to race cars or high-end supercars. However, reports suggest that Hyundai seems to have found a way to simplify its assembly process, allowing the brand to bring the sporty feature to more vehicles.

As seen from the patent images, the steering wheel can be seen with a cut-out at the top, along with grooves inside the wheel for the wiring. The new steering wheel structure will be made common, allowing Hyundai to reduce its production cost. The new structure will also allow the carmaker to add various plug-and-play trims.

The patent images though, showcase a Genesis-branded steering wheel, indicating it could be offered on its new "Magma" performance sub-brand. However, with the tech still in its patent stage, it remains to be seen if Hyundai will actually bring the feature into production models.
