All-new Nissan Micra EV unveiled

The new Micra is based on the Alliance’s AmpR platform, which it shares with the Renault 5 hatchback.

Nissan has unveiled the all-new sixth-generation Micra in pure EV form. It will go on sale in Europe later this year.

The new Micra EV has been designed at Nissan’s Design Europe (NDE) in London. Unlike the cute looks that it has been known for, the new model has a more SUV-like design. It gets LED daytime running lights encircling the main headlight housings. On unlocking the car, the lights perform a short choreographed “welcome wink” where the front lights pulse from left to right and then right to left. The same light show is performed on locking the car, acting as a ‘farewell’. At the rear, the taillamps are defined by a simple but ornate LED light design with circular lighting elements. There is bold Nissan lettering on a black trim that runs across the tailgate. All new MICRA variants will come with 18-inch wheels, with three different options depending on the variant: “active” wheel covers, “Iconic” and “Sport” alloy wheel designs. 14 exterior colours with dual tone options of a black or grey roof will be on offer.

The new Micra is based on the Alliance’s AmpR platform, which it shares with the Renault 5 hatchback. It measures under 4000 mm in length and less than 1800 mm in width. It has a wheel of 2,540 mm.

On the interior, the Micra EV gets twin 10.1-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment, respectively. Apart from a three-spoke steering wheel, there are hidden features that include a moulded outline of Japan’s most famous landmark, Mount Fuji, incorporated into the storage space between the front seats. It gets a boot space of 326 litres.

The Micra EV will be offered with two battery pack options. First is a 40 kWh pack developing 120 BHP and 225 Nm of torque with a claimed range of 308 km. The second is a 52 kWh pack putting out 147 BHP and 245 Nm torque. It has a claimed range of 408 km.

The 40 kWh model can take up to 80 kW of DC fast charging, while the 52 kWh model can take up to 100 kW of DC fast charging. It can charge from 15%-80% in 30 minutes. The Micra also gets the Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) function.
