Volkswagen to drop 'ID' nomenclature for its future EVs

Volkswagen is likely to begin with the new name changes in 2026.

German carmaker Volkswagen is all set to drop the ‘ID’ prefix from its EV models. Future VWs like the ID.2 and the newly announced VW ID. EVERY1 will get more normal names, not a jumble mix of all-caps letters, punctuation and numbers.

"The cars will get proper names again," said VW Board Member Martin Sander in during a media interview. "This question will arise specifically with the market launch of new models—neither the ID. 2 nor the ID. EVERY1 will have those names in series production."

Volkswagen is likely to begin with the new name changes in 2026, that’s when the brand is launching the ID.2. The other ID models will get facelifts around the same time. This was confirmed by another VW Board Member, Kai Grünitz.

Volkswagen hasn’t given any hint on the new names or design yet. Sander says that'll happen "when the time comes."

With this development, Volkswagen joins other carmakers like Mercedes-Benz and Audi who also decided to rebrand their electric vehicles.

Back home, Volkswagen had showcased the ID.4 EV in India in early 2024.
