Ola Electric acquires e-scooter maker Etergo

Ola Electric has acquired Amsterdam-based e-scooter maker Etergo. The company plans to introduce the all-electric AppScooter in India and other international markets.

Etergo was founded in 2014. In 2018, the company revealed its first electric scooter called the AppScooter. It uses swappable high energy density batteries with a claimed range of 240 km on a single charge. The company plans to launch it in India in 2021.

Ola Electric also plans to set up extensive charging and swapping networks in India. At present, the company is running pilot projects to deploy electric 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers and charging stations across cities.

BattRE gps:ie electric scooter launched at Rs. 64,990

Jaipur-based electric 2-wheeler maker BattRE has launched the gps:ie e-scooter in India at a price of Rs. 64,990 (ex-showroom).

The BattRE gps:ie is powered by a BLDC hub motor and a 48V 24 Ah lithium ferrate phosphate battery. It has a claimed maximum range of 65 km, while the charging time of the battery is claimed to be 2.5 hours.

The gps:ie comes with a hydraulic fork suspension at the front and disc brakes at the front and rear.

The BattRE gps:ie comes with features such as live location tracking through GPS, driver behaviour and trip reports, remote immobilisation, geo-fencing, secure parking, speed lock and crash indicator. These can be accessed via a mobile app.

The price of the e-scooter includes 1-year subscription cost. From the second year onwards, customers will have to pay Rs. 1,200 for the annual subscription.

China-based electric scooter maker Niu eyeing Indian market

According to a media report, China-based electric scooter maker Niu is planning to enter the Indian market.

Niu has released a statement confirming that the company will pursue differentiated international strategies for different overseas markets, such as Southeast Asia and India. The company aims to fuel revenue growth and increase brand awareness through expansion into these markets.

Niu manufactures high-performance smart e-scooters. The brand has its presence in 38 countries and is said to have sold more than 1 million products worldwide. Its current product portfolio includes the NQi, MQi, UQi, NIU Aero, Gova, RQi and TQi models.

Is this the India-bound Suzuki electric scooter?

A design patent of an electric scooter filed by Suzuki has surfaced online. It is believed to be the company's first battery-powered scooter for the Indian market.

The patent images reveal the basic mechanical layout of the scooter. It appears to have a frame made of round and square sections. It seems the battery is mounted under the seat. The electric motor is placed just under the battery. The detailed specifications of this motor are not known at this point of time.

The patent images suggest that the e-scooter could get telescopic fork suspension at the front and a single shock absorber at the rear. The scooter also appears to have a box section swingarm at the rear.

In November 2019, Suzuki had announced that the company would start testing its electric scooter in India as early as 2020. Rumours suggest that the company might launch its first electric scooter in 2021.

Bajaj-KTM working on lightweight electric mopeds

According to a media report, Bajaj and KTM will be developing lightweight electric mopeds. These are expected to go into production in 2022 and could be built at the Bajaj plant in Pune. They will be exported to other countries.

The platform is said to support scooters, mopeds and motorized bicycles. These will be sold under both brands.

The report claims that Bajaj and KTM had started development on Powered Two Wheeler (PTW) electric vehicles in FY2020. The PTW electric vehicles use 48 volt powertrains in the 3-10 kW power range.

It has also been reported that Bajaj and KTM are developing high-end electric motorcycles. In Europe, KTM has started producing two electric motorcycles called the KTM SX-E 5 and Husqvarna EE 5.

Zypp announces home delivery of sanitized e-scooters for rent

Zypp has started free home delivery of sanitized e-scooters in Gurgaon. The electric scooters will be sanitized before delivery as a precautionary measure against the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Zypp e-scooters are fitted with IoT locks which can be remotely hired using a mobile app. Existing users now have an option to get the e-scooters delivered to their doorstep.

Zypp offers weekly and monthly subscription plans starting at Rs. 650 / week for Zypp Uno and at Rs. 950 / week for Zypp Thunder. Zypp Uno is a single rider e-scooter which runs upto 55 km on a single charge while Zypp Thunder is a double seat e-scooter which is claimed to run upto 70 km on a single charge.

Rumour: Hero developing eMaestro electric scooter

According to a media report, Hero MotoCorp is developing an electric scooter. The bike maker is said to have built a prototype called the eMaestro concept.

The eMaestro concept could be based on the Maestro Edge platform. It is said to be powered by a lithium-ion battery and a permanent magnet motor.

The concept scooter looks similar to the Maestro Edge 125. It features red alloy wheels and front fork. The report states that the e-scooter also gets a digital instrument cluster.

Once in production, the eMaestro electric scooter could compete with the likes of the Bajaj Chetak, TVS iQube and Ather 450.

Hero Electric has unveiled the AE-3 electric trike at the 2020 Auto Expo.

The AE-3 is a 3-wheeled scooter equipped with a self-standing gyroscopic stability feature with Auto balance park switch. It also features a digital instrument cluster, mobile charger, walk assist, reverse assist at 26 km/h, mobile app, GPS, GPRS, real-time tracking and geofencing.

The AE-3 is powered by a 5,500 W motor and a 48 V / 4 kWh lithium-ion battery. The battery offers a maximum range of 100 km on a single charge. Recharging the battery takes 5 hours. The e-trike has a claimed top speed of 80 km/h.

2020 Auto Expo: Hero Electric AE-29 e-scooter unveiled

Hero Electric has unveiled the AE-29 electric scooter at the 2020 Auto Expo.

The AE-29 is powered by a 1,000 W motor and a 48 V / 3.5 kWh lithium-ion battery. The e-scooter has a claimed maximum range of 80 km on a single charge, while its top speed is claimed to be 55 km/h. Charging the battery takes 4 hours.

The AE-29 e-scooter has Bluetooth connectivity and features such as anti-theft smart lock, mobile charger, mobile app, digital instrument cluster, walk assist and reverse function.

Rumour: Hero Duet E e-scooter to take on Bajaj Chetak

According to a media report, Hero MotoCorp is planning to launch the Duet E electric scooter in India later this year.

The Duet E was showcased at the 2016 Auto Expo. It had a claimed range of 65 km on a single charge and could accelerate from 0-60 km/h in 6.5 seconds.

The Duet E would compete with the Bajaj Chetak and the recently launched TVS iQube Electric.

The Chetak costs Rs. 1 lakh (ex-showroom) and is powered by a 4.1 kW electric motor and a battery pack with a claimed maximum range of 95 km on a single charge. The TVS iQube Electric uses a 4.4 kW electric motor and has a claimed range of 75 km on a single charge. It is priced at Rs. 1.15 lakh.
