Yamaha developing an electric scooter for India

Yamaha is keen to to see how India's EV policy evolves before launching its first electric 2-wheeler.

The electric scooter segment has grown substantially ever since the government introduced subsidies and other sops. Following the success of Ather Energy, large players like Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors have entered the fray. Now, Yamaha too is drawing plans to enter the EV space.

According to a media report, Yamaha is working on an all-new electric 2-wheeler platform for India and the global markets. But, before it could commit to introducing its first e-scooter in India, the company wants to see how India's EV policy evolves.

Yamaha had showcased the E01 e-scooter concept at the 2019 Toyota Motor Show. In the same year, the company launched the EC-05 electric scooter in Taiwan. It comes with removable batteries that offer a maximum range of around 100 km.

Yamaha is also gearing up to launch its first hybrid scooters in the Indian market. The Fascino 125 FI Hybrid and the Ray ZR Hybrid will be launched later this year.

Govt. revises FAME II subsidy on electric 2-wheelers

The subsidy on electric 2-wheelers has been raised from Rs. 10,000/kWh to Rs. 15,000/kWh.

The government of India has amended the FAME II scheme for electric vehicles in a bid to boost electric 2-wheeler sales.

As per the latest notification, the subsidy on electric 2-wheelers has been raised from Rs. 10,000/kWh to Rs. 15,000/kWh with a cap of 40% of the cost of the vehicle.

The government has also notified that it will go for aggregation via the Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) to bring the cost of electric 3-wheelers at par with ICE 3-wheelers. EESL will aggregate demand for 3 lakh electric 3-wheelers for multiple user segments.

For electric buses, cities with a population of over 4 million like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Surat and Pune will be targeted. EESL will go for aggregation of demand in these cities for remaining e-buses under the scheme on an OPEX basis.

Faster Adoption and manufacturing of electric vehicles in India (FAME II) was launched to generate demand for hybrid and electric vehicles. 76,008 vehicles have been sold under this scheme as of now.

Honda Benly e electric scooter spied in India

The Honda Benly e electric scooter has been spotted testing at the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Pune.

The Benly e is a quirky looking electric scooter aimed at the commercial vehicle segment. It has a hexagonal headlamp that protrudes out of the front apron. The rear seat has been replaced with a flat deck that is designed to carry up to 60 kg. The front apron has a provision to attach a basket.

The Benly e features a telescopic fork at the front and has a mono-shock in the rear. It rides on a 12-inch front wheel and has a 10-inch wheel at the rear.

The electric scooter uses a 2.8 kW electric motor. The Benly e II comes with a more powerful 4.2 kW motor. Both models come with two swappable 48 V batteries that are claimed to offer up to 87 km of range on a single charge.

BMW CE 04 electric scooter spotted in production guise

The upcoming BMW electric scooter has been spotted testing in its production-guise for the first time.

BMW unveiled the CE 04 electric scooter concept late last year. During its unveil, BMW had confirmed that the e-scooter would enter production soon.

Now, a near production-ready version of the electric scooter has been spotted undergoing testing. As seen from the images, the production version carries forward many styling elements from the concept.

The images also show the electric scooter featuring a rear mudguard with integrated indicators, LED headlamps at the front, a large TFT instrument cluster that will feature smartphone connectivity and keyless operation; among plenty others.

The production version is seen sporting a telescopic fork suspension at the front and an offset mono-shock suspension setup at the rear. The scooter also features an unusual set of solid wheels at both ends, along with a belt-drive system powering the rear wheel.

The scooter also has under-seat storage, which is claimed to have enough space to store a full-face helmet.

The specifications of the electric powertrain of the BMW scooter are yet to be revealed. The images show that the battery pack will be positioned below the footboard.

New Piaggio One e-scooter unveiled ahead of global debut

The all-new Piaggio One electric scooter will have its global debut at the upcoming Beijing Motor Show on 28 May.

Piaggio has unveiled its all-new One electric scooter. The official unveil of the electric scooter took place on the social media platform TIK TOK, revealing that Piaggio will be targeting the younger audience for its new electric scooter offering.

The new Piaggio One electric scooter is also said to come with a host of features and technology. These include a digital instrument cluster, LED lights all around, a keyless start system, spacious under-seat storage, low seat for additional comfort, robust pull-out footpegs and a wide footboard, among a few others.

Piaggio did not reveal the technical specifications of the electric scooter. It is expected to be announced during its global debut on 28 May, at the 2021 Beijing Motor Show.

However, the company did mention that the Piaggio One will be offered in multiple versions, with varying power and range figures. The Piaggio One electric scooter will also come with a removable lithium-ion battery pack, offering ease of charging.

The company also confirmed that the new One electric scooter will go on sale in the European markets from June this year. Piaggio also mentioned that the electric scooter is targeted towards global emissions-free mobility, meaning that the new model could be introduced in other international markets at a slightly later stage as well.

Simple Energy Mark 2 e-scooter to be launched on August 15

The Mark 2 will compete with the Ather 450X, Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube in the Indian market.

Bangalore-based start-up, Simple Energy has announced the launch date for its first electric scooter.

The Mark 2 will make its debut on August 15, 2021. The Simple Energy Mark 2 is a compact and sporty looking e-scooter and will compete with the Ather 450X, Bajaj Chetak and TVS iQube. It comes with an LED headlamp and a touchscreen instrument console that has navigation and Bluetooth connectivity.

The Mark 2 uses a mid-drive motor that is powered by a 4.8 kWh lithium-ion battery. The company claims a 0-50 km/h acceleration time of 3.6 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 100 km/h. The battery is said to offer a maximum range of 240 km on a single charge.

Honda files patent for PCX Electric scooter in India

The PCX e-scooter uses a 4.2 kW motor that is powered by a 50.4 V lithium-ion battery pack.

Honda has filed a patent for the PCX electric scooter in India.

The PCX e-scooter was showcased at the 2018 Auto Expo. It uses a 4.2 kW motor that is powered by a 50.4 V lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack is removable but it can also be charged while connected to the scooter. It is said to offer a maximum range of 40 km on a single charge.

The PCX features a sporty maxi-scooter look. It has a large front apron with a twin headlamp setup and an integrated windscreen. It comes with an LCD instrument cluster and a remote start key.

The electric scooter is equipped with telescopic forks at the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear. It rides on alloy wheels and comes with a single front disc brake.

Hero MotoCorp's first electric 2-wheeler coming in 2022

Hero MotoCorp and Taiwan-based Gogoro have been working on fixed as well as swappable battery technology.

Electric 2-wheelers are slowly gaining popularity in India. With big names like Bajaj Auto and TVS entering the fray, customers now have a handful of options to choose from. Hero MotoCorp is yet to enter this space but that is about to change.

Niranjan Gupta, CFO, Hero MotoCorp, has confirmed that the company will launch its first electric 2-wheeler in the first quarter of 2022.

While details about the new model are scarce, it is said that the company has been working on fixed as well as swappable battery technology in collaboration with Taiwan-based Gogoro.

The Vektorr and the E-Pilen concepts are said to represent Husqvarna's vision of electric urban mobility for the future. The concepts will also set a benchmark for quality, aesthetics and performance for future models from Husqvarna.

The Husqvarna E-01 will be powered by a 4 kW electric motor.

Husqvarna has postponed the launch of its E-01 electric scooter by a year. It is now expected to be introduced in 2022.

The Husqvarna E-01 will be powered by a 4 kW electric motor and it is expected to be manufactured at Bajaj Auto's Chakan plant near Pune. The company is also developing an EV platform that will be able to support electric motors ranging from 4 kW to 10 kW.
