Volvo EX60 confirmed for 2026; To debut next-gen platform

The upcoming EX60 will be the first model from Volvo to be based on the next-generation SPA3 platform

According to reports, Volvo is said to be working on its next electric crossover, the EX60. As the name suggests, the upcoming Volvo EX60 will be positioned below the flagship EX90 and alongside its ICE counterpart, the XC60.

The upcoming EX60 will be the first model from Volvo to be based on the next-generation SPA3 platform, unlike its larger sibling, the EX90, which is underpinned by the SPA2 architecture. The next-gen SPA3 platform is said to be the most advanced yet and is claimed to help the brand build vehicles in a more cost-effective manner. Reports state that the new architecture will feature structural battery packs, which will help reduce both weight and cost. In addition, the new battery packs on the Volvo EVs will be more compact and energy-dense, which should help Volvo achieve an impressive 93% efficiency from its next-gen electric motors.

Also, the next-gen platform will be modular, which should help it underpin all future Volvo models. The "Superset Tech Stack", as Volvo calls it, is a standardised set of hardware, software and production modules which can be interchangeable throughout the lineup. Volvo will also reportedly make use of megacasting processes to reduce the number of parts in each vehicle.

Reports mention that the upcoming EX60 electric SUV could debut sometime in 2026. The news comes amidst Volvo's recent announcement that it will go back on its EV-only plans by 2030.
