The government of India has announced a new subsidy scheme to promote electric mobility in India. The ‘PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) Scheme' has been approved with an outlay of Rs 10,900 crore over a period of 2 years.
Under the PM E-DRIVE scheme, the government will provide subsidies and incentives worth Rs 3,679 crore to boost sales of EVs in India. The scheme will support 24.79 lakh electric two-wheelers, 3.16 lakh electric three-wheelers and 14,028 electric buses.
The government has set aside Rs 4,391 crore for the procurement of 14,028 electric buses for public transport in 9 cities with a population of over 40 lakh. These include Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Surat, Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad.
Under the new scheme, the government also plans to install 22,100 fast chargers for electric cars, 1,800 fast chargers for electric buses and 48,400 fast chargers for electric two and three-wheelers. Additionally, Rs 500 crore has been allocated for the procurement of electric ambulances.
